Ask a longtime Roswell resident where to eat on Canton Street and you will usually get the same three answers you got in 2019. Ask them what is happening on Canton Street this August and the answer gets more interesting, because the street no longer behaves like one place. It has quietly split into a south end that leans into anchor restaurants and a north end that runs on a slower, more independent tempo, and a third district a mile and a half away is about to change how the whole rotation works.

The August Nights Already on the Calendar
The month has three anchors worth putting on the fridge. All three are within walking distance of one another, and none of them requires a reservation.
- Thursday, August 20, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. — Alive in Roswell, the free monthly festival held every third Thursday evening from April through October. Fifteen restaurants sit inside the event boundary on Canton Street alone, with ten more within a mile. Food trucks set up in the Rock 'N' Taco parking lot, and From the Earth Brewing Company runs the beverage tents pouring Gate City Brewing craft beer, wine, and sangria. Open containers are allowed inside the district, but they have to be in clear plastic and purchased on site.
- Friday, August 14, 7:00 p.m. — Music on the Hill at 38 Hill Street. This month's booking is Piano Man vs. Rocket Man, a tribute to Billy Joel and Elton John. The series is a free outdoor concert on the Roswell City Hall Lawn every second Friday, May through September.
- Now through Saturday, August 29 — the Historic Roswell Photography Competition and Exhibit at the Roswell History Museum, hosted by the Roswell Photographic Society and the Roswell Historical Society. Free, indoors, and a legitimate reason to duck out of the heat between lunch and dinner.
One note on Alive in Roswell that catches even regulars off guard: ride-hailing pickups on Canton Street or Alpharetta Highway back up traffic during the event, so the city routes Uber and Lyft to Mimosa Boulevard instead. If someone in the car is not driving home, tell the driver 37 Magnolia Street before the app defaults to the restaurant address.
The South End Still Anchors the Street
The stretch of Canton Street between roughly 928 and 1028 is what most people picture when they picture Canton Street. It is dense, walkable in one direction, and where the accolades cluster.
Table & Main, the Southern tavern set in a former home along Canton Street, is best known for its fried chicken and its seasonal menu, and it holds a 2024 Michelin Bib Gourmand. A few doors down, Osteria Mattone runs a Roman trattoria out of another restored home, and 1920 Tavern keeps its speakeasy-styled dining room open until 11 on Fridays and Saturdays. Chelo brings Persian cooking to the block with a full bar and a patio, and Roux on Canton, Salt Factory Pub, and Rock 'N' Taco fill in the range from Southern to gastropub to casual Mexican.
Two names on this end are worth pulling out for locals who have not been in a while. Little Alley Steak sits at 955 Canton, and Le Bistro at Roswell Provisions shares that same address as a French bistro tucked into the provisions market. Canton St. Social, at 14 Elizabeth Way just off the main strip, is under new ownership and has been quietly rebuilding its brunch menu, including a design-your-own Bloody Mary and Mimosa program on Sundays.
The North End Runs at a Different Tempo
Walk past The Vick Koffee & Kocktails and the street changes character. Sidewalks widen, parking gets easier, and the businesses get more idiosyncratic.
North End Kitchen & Bar at 1170 Canton, from the group behind Zest and Lola's Burger & Tequila Bar, runs shareable new American with expansive indoor and patio space, weekend live music, and a massive fireplace on the patio. Wegman's Bayou Louisiana Kitchen at 1169 Canton is tucked behind Raiford Gallery and does traditional New Orleans cooking with a few twists. Gracious Plenty Bakery and Breakfast at 1164 handles the early half of the day. Roswell Beer Market at 1186 is dog and kid friendly, with a wall of taps and a rotating chalkboard that runs from IPAs and stouts to sours and hard seltzers.
The Vick, at 1182 Canton, is the one to know if you have not been. Chef Kadijah opened it as a specialty coffee and cocktail spot with lattes like the Campfire, Mountaintop, and Sweet Lavender, and the tapas menu makes it a plausible early dinner.

Roswell has three breweries within a short drive of Canton Street, and they are structured differently enough to be worth choosing among instead of defaulting to one.
Gate City Brewing Company, Roswell's first brewery, turned two former mechanic shops into a taproom pouring 20 house-brewed beers, with The Artillery Room running a craft cocktail program in the same compound. Variant Brewing Company sits a few blocks away with four year-round beers plus seasonals and specialty "variants," and From the Earth Brewing Company, the first brewpub in Roswell, pairs locally sourced food with the beer program. From the Earth is also the vendor pouring at Alive in Roswell on the 20th, which is a useful piece of trivia if you want to try the beer without committing to the taproom.
Summer Sippin' Ends This Month
Summer Sippin' is Roswell's annual summer drink competition, running June through August, where participants rate drinks to vote for a favorite. The window closes at the end of the month, which means if you have been meaning to work through the participating menus on Canton Street, August is the last chance to log ratings before the results settle for the year. It is the kind of low-effort local ritual that gives a Wednesday night out a small stake.
The Crabapple Road District Is Not Hypothetical Anymore
The most consequential thing happening for Canton Street this year is not on Canton Street. It is a mile and a half north.
Roswell City Council approved the Crabapple Road Restaurant District at the intersection of Crabapple Road and Crossville Road, redeveloping a property currently containing offices into restaurants, cafes, and offices with a large central green area. The plan transforms 2.65 acres of office space into 24,000 square feet of restaurant and retail with 7,500 square feet of green space at the center. The designation matters because it lets patrons leave restaurants with alcoholic beverages inside the district, the same open-container rule that makes Canton Street feel like Canton Street.
For residents, this reads less like a construction announcement and more like a shift in the weekly rotation. Canton Street has been the default for a decade because it was the only walkable, open-container district in the city. Once Crabapple opens, Roswell will have two of them, and the calculus of where to go on a Thursday will start to depend on which end of town you live on, not which restaurants you have not tried.
That is the quiet story of the summer. Canton Street is not being replaced or diluted. It is becoming one of two, which is a very different thing for a street that has spent years being the only.
A Weekend to Actually Circle
If you circle one stretch of the calendar, make it Friday the 14th into Thursday the 20th. Piano Man vs. Rocket Man on the City Hall Lawn on Friday, a Saturday morning at the Roswell History Museum for the photography exhibit before it closes, a Sunday brunch on the covered patio at Canton St. Social, and Alive in Roswell to close the following Thursday. That week uses the south end, the north end, the museum, and the free civic programming without repeating a venue.
Park at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center lot or City Hall for Alive in Roswell. Both have the closest walking proximity to Canton Street and the Antique Lot venue, with a trolley stop that runs between drop-off points.
